Why a Mani-Pedi Isn't Self-Care?


What?!


Meg, a Mani-pedi IS self-care! You're crazy.


Before we get into that, let me tell you this.


I conducted a social media experiment.

I asked people what their definition of self-care is.

Overwhelmingly people stated, "do what makes you happy." And if someone would have asked me what my definition of self-care is, I would have said the same thing two years ago.


Happy doesn't necessarily mean your decisions will "feel good."

I've learned that what feels good in the moment is not necessarily the best for me in the long run.


I've overextended myself financially for a variety of reasons, all in the hopes of gaining more value from the people around me instead of realizing that I am valuable all by myself.

I've also splurged on purchases I didn't necessarily need or want all to keep up appearances. And this lack of self-control was a lack of me not valuing me.

I've also had the mindset of "Megan's gonna do what Megan wants to do."


And I have learned this, doing WHATEVER you feel like doing is not self-care.


What does "doing whatever you want" look like?

It can look like not taking care of your body by neglecting exercise and proper nutrition or unnecessary purchases or filling every second of your day every week.


Whoa, Meg, that sounds harsh.


I know. It feels harsh to me too.

I've learned there is a balance.


Forgive yourself (talking to me here).

Forgive yourself for not knowing what you didn't know.


Can those things be relaxing and enjoyable?

Absolutely.


But self-care is ultimately about loving YOU for YOU.


Self- care is realizing that your value isn't in your work or your appearance or your location. When you accept yourself and love yourself, you'll make better decisions for you!

Ultimately those decisions can change the cycles you've often found yourself in time and time again. Truly loving yourself can change the trajectory of your life.


So, what are some ways to care for yourself?

1. Limiting Screen Time

2. Reading a Book

3. Saying No to Things that Cause Stress and Anxiety

4. Therapy

5. Re-evaluating your lifestyle and what is important

6. Limiting your schedule

7. Intentional Silence

8. Coffee with a trusted loved one

9. Moving Your Body (OrangeTheory, Yoga, PowerLifting)

10. Fueling Your Body Properly


I've been on a journey trying to figure out what works best for me.

And I will add that a lot of the above practices have helped me immensely.


Also, I have to give credit where credit is due. I recently read To Hell with the Hustle by Jefferson Bethke, and the daily practices that he suggested in his book are in the above list. If you haven't read this book or you haven't heard of it, check it out. THWTH opened my eyes to daily habits and rituals that ultimately make up the trajectory of your life.
